UPSC IAS Syllabus 2018: The Civil Service Examination or IAS exam is one of the most sought after recruitment exams in India. IAS exam is the gateway to the prestigious administrative services under the government of India. These services include various respectable positions on the administrative level. UPSC IAS 2018 Exam Pattern & Syllabus
The Civil Services Exam is conducted in three stages as follows.
- Preliminary Examination
- Main Examination
- Personal Interview
IAS Preliminary Exam Pattern
The preliminary exam is conducted according to the following pattern:
- Papers: 2
- General Studies Paper I – 100 questions – 200 marks – 2 hours
- General Studies Paper II (Aptitude) – 80 questions – 200 marks – 2 hours
- Minimum qualifying marks: 33% in each paper
- Language: Hindi & English
- Questions types: Objective Multiple Choice questions
- Preliminary exam is qualifying in nature
- There is a negative marking of 1/3rd or 33% marks for each wrong answer.
IAS Syllabus 2018 for Preliminary Exam:
The IAS Preliminary written exam is based on the following syllabus.
Paper 1: General Ability Test Syllabus
National and international current events, Indian National Movement and Indian history, Indian and World Geography (Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World), Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc., Indian Polity and Governance -Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc., General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization General Science.
Paper 2: Aptitude Test Syllabus
Comprehension, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Interpersonal skills and communication skills, General mental ability, Decision-making and problem solving, English Language Comprehension skills, Basic numerical ability Class X level (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.).
IAS Main Examination Pattern 2018
The IAS Main examination is conducted as per the following pattern:
- Total Papers in IAS Mains Exam: 9
- Paper-A: Any Indian Language (Qualifying Paper) – 300 Marks –
- Paper-B: English (Qualifying Paper) – 300 Marks
- Paper-I: Essay– 250 Marks
- Paper-II: General studies-I– 250 Marks
- Paper-III: General studies-II– 250 Marks
- Paper-IV: General studies-III– 250 Marks
- Paper-V: General studies-IV– 250 Marks
- Paper-VI: Optional Subject (Paper-1) – 250 Marks
- Paper-VII: Optional Subject (Paper-2) – 250 Marks
- Interview (Personality Test) – 275 marks

- Questions type: Theoretical (Essay questions)
- Paper A & B are of qualifying nature and do not contribute to the final score.
IAS Main Examination 2018 Syllabus:
The syllabus of the nine papers of the IAS Main qualifying exam is explained below.
Paper A: Any Indian Language – Candidates have to choose one language from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.
Comprehensive questions on given passages, precise/summary writing, usage as well as vocabulary, short essay, translation from English to the Indian language & conversely.
Paper B: English – Comprehensive questions on given passages, precise/summary writing, usage and vocabulary, short essay.
Paper 1: Essay
Candidates will be required to write essays on one of the given topics. Marks will be given for orderly arrangement of ideas and effective expressions.
Paper 2: General Studies I
Heritage & Culture of India, History & Culture of the World and the Society, Modern history of India, Architecture & Literature, and Freedom struggle, etc.
Paper 3: General Studies II
Governance, Polity, Constitution, Social Justice, Internal Relations, duties of states and the Union, groupings and agreements in India, policies and politics of other countries in the interest of India, international institutions, Parliament, etc.
Paper 4 – General Studies III
Technology, Economic Development, Environmental, Security, Disaster Management, Bio-Diversity, Government budgeting, security challenges and management, security forces of India, Disaster management, etc.
Paper 5 – General Studies IV
Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude, Emotional intelligence, Human values and more
Paper 6 and Paper 7 – Optional Subject Paper 1/ Optional Subject Paper 2
The candidate can select two options from the following list of Subjects:
